By the Sun's Light
Listen to the work here!
By the Sun’s Light is a work for a percussion trio, playing a glockenspiel, marimba, and cajon, dedicated to my partner and our love for each other. In particular, this piece draws inspiration from imagery of two people in love, each slowly drifting toward the sun, and toward each other, the two souls and their love for each other combining with the sun’s light as they approach its surface. This work is a gift for her, and the sunlight that accompanies the feeling of being loved.
The music is relaxed and somewhat languid in character, inspired by the relaxation of basking in the sunlight. The glockenspiel plays smooth melodies over the marimba's accompanimental pattern, which balances tropically-influenced harmonies with a bass line of a similar nature. The cajon maintains forward rhythmic motion in a manner reminiscent of easy-going coffee shop jam sessions. The work is in ternary form, with an even more soothing and relaxing middle section before picking the pace back up and dancing along to the work’s conclusion. It is my hope that the energy conveyed by this work in performance matches the energy of being in the sun with loved ones, and the feeling of knowing, thanks to the metaphorical sunlight that those loved ones share with you, that everything is going to work out in the end.
