Grooves 3: Ancients
Listen to the work here!
Grooves 3: Ancients is the third in an ongoing series of cadences for a drumline consisting of Snare Drums, Tenor Drums, Bass Drums, and Cymbals. The cadences in this collection are connected by their references to ancient civilizations across the world. They are:
I. Aztec
II. Pharaoh
III. River Basin
Each of these cadences presents groove-oriented playing, as might be expected from the title, with unique musical elements throughout to create musical variety.
Aztec is a cadence with a deep moving pulsation throughout, and uses additive and subtractive processes to create musical variety, which could be varied and repeated to the drumline’s tastes. Pharaoh is a slower shuffle, which uses buzz rolls in the snare drum to call to mind the sandstorms of Ancient Egypt. River Basin is a high-octane skittering cadence with a double/half-time feel.
