Grooves 4: Major-General is the fourth in an ongoing series of cadences for a drumline consisting of Snare Drums, Tenor Drums, Bass Drums, and Cymbals. The cadences in this collection are named after and inspired by the matters in which The Major-General from The Pirates of Penzance purports (in his titular song) to be an expert in. They are:

I. Vegetable

II. Animal

III. Mineral

Each of these cadences presents groove-oriented playing, as might be expected from the title, with unique musical elements throughout to create musical variety.

Vegetable takes the listeners’ ears through the different sections of the drumline, opening with an introduction utilizing dry sounds for a unique sonic palette. Animal is appropriately animalistic in nature, with a musical nature that encourages stomping and jumping. Mineral is a cadence utilizing additive process between different sections of the drumline, and these short ideas can be repeated in different combinations.
