Grooves 5: Global Rhythms is the fifth in an ongoing series of cadences for a drumline consisting of Snare Drums, Tenor Drums, Bass Drums, and Cymbals. The cadences in this collection are all inspired by music-making idioms around the world. The cadences included are:

I. Trinidad

II. Indonesia

III. Ghana

IV. India

V. Brazil

Each of these cadences presents groove-oriented playing, as might be expected from the title, with unique musical elements throughout to create musical variety.

The inspiration and musical material for these works is inspired by my studies of non-Western percussion instruments and music-making idioms at the University of North Texas, and my goal is not to appropriate these incredible traditions, but to enable further exposure to the unique rhythmic possibilities that they represent. This collection, and my musical growth through the study of non-Western music, would not be possible without Jose Aponte, Poovalur Sriji, Ed Smith, Gideon Alorwoyie, Denver Nuckolls, and Mark Ford, and I owe a huge debt of gratitude to them.
