Rainbow Suite
Listen to the work here!
Rainbow Suite is a suite for solo piano, in six movements. The work is my first suite for solo piano. The extra-musical idea which gives rise to this work’s structure is the association of the six colors of the rainbow (I apologize in advance to the indigo fans!) with parts of the body. During the composition of this piece, an idea developed to create a model for how I wanted to live my life which combined these color-body connections and attached them to emotional qualities:
I. “Ultraviolet Eyes”: To always look upon the world regally and gracefully.
II. “Orange-Lit Heart”: To carry compassion for all who walk the Earth.
III. “Red-Hot, Bone Dry”: To never let pain keep one from love, or vice versa.
IV. “Golden Voices”: To always speak and present in a way that relaxes and calms.
V. “Blue-Collar Souls”: To maintain an appreciation for those improving the world.
VI. “Evergreen Mind”: To always be growing one’s mind and learning new things.
As this piece synthesized elements of the music I came to enjoy over several years, and was a peak of my compositional oeuvre at the time it was written, I would like to think that these emotional goals are things that I have carried with me and followed through on, and I hope that this suite can allow others to brighten their own rainbows. This work was premiered at my high school senior piano recital in 2019.
