The Young Dreamer’s Storybook is a collection of short etudes for beginning to intermediate pianists, as well as a collection of studies in Baroque harmony and contrapuntal traditions. The work has been developed from collected assignments from a course in 18th Century Counterpoint at the University of North Texas, instructed by Dr. Diego Cubero.

Being largely pedagogical in nature (both for pianists and those learning to compose within the regulations of Baroque harmony), each etude occupies a specific Baroque identity:

I. Falling Amethysts explores the harmonizing and elaborating of a bass line.

II. Sandstone Pools explores the same idea, with elaborations in both hands.

III. The Giraffe explores the melodic elaboration of a defined chord progression.

IV. Mice in the Yard explores the same concepts of melodic elaboration.

V. Altitudes involves the use of extended harmonic sequence as a writing tool.

VI. Departing Ships is a simple triple meter dance, such as the waltz and courante.

VII. Ancient Rivers explores melodic elaboration within the triple meter dance.

VIII. Learning to Dance gradually develops a sarabande, one figuration at a time.

IX. A Certain Shade of Violet is the exposition to a fugue in three voices.

The titles of these etudes suggest vivid images suitable for exposing young pianists to the wondrous beauty and unlimited potential of musical expression.
