Trapped in the Ice
Listen to the work here!
Trapped in the Ice is a full length work for indoor drumline, which was commissioned by, written for, and performed by the Spring Valley High School Indoor Drumline in Las Vegas, Nevada, under the direction of Mr. David Seifert. The music of the work tells a vague story of a group of villagers living in a world of snow and ice, whose life becomes thrown into chaos when a kraken-like monster is awakened who had previously been trapped in the ice.
I. “Arctic Village” presents joyous, wintry, carol-like music, introducing the villagers and the cozy lives which they lead.
II. “Night Frost” has the sun setting on the villagers, leading to a spooky but still beautiful winter environment, which of course is thrown out of the window as the monster is released from its icy imprisonment.
III. “The Ice Monster” shows off the power of the beast through aggressive and angular material, and through various solo passages, the villagers are able to defeat the ice monster and celebrate their return to idyllic life.
The music presents various opportunities for soloistic performance in the various sections of the drumline, and is a shorter piece of music, allowing for performance in lower divisions of competition, or the construction of more elaborate props during the ensemble’s allotted performance period.
(Note: As this music is self-published, I currently have no communication with regional indoor drumline circuits to ensure circuit exclusivity. However, I will make sure not to sell the music to more than one ensemble performing in the same circuit within the same year. This music was written originally for the specific instrumentation needs of the commissioning ensemble, and I am happy to be hired by programs wishing to perform the show to arrange and orchestrate the music with more parts as needed.)
