Watermelon Rag is a work for a choir of flutes, with the following instrumentation:
Piccolo in C
Flute in C 1 - 4
Alto Flute in G
Bass Flute in C
The work is a simple and joyous ragtime piece, inspired by the ragtime music of Scott Joplin and Koji Kondo. The work is named after the watermelon, a fruit associated with summertime, outdoor celebrations, and camaraderie, which I also think have associations with ragtime music. The work follows the A-B-A-C-D form of early works by Scott Joplin, such as his famous “Maple Leaf Rag”.
