Zoologist's Fanfare
Listen to the work here!
Zoologist’s Fanfare is a short work in the style of a fanfare, for a brass choir with the following instrumentation:
Bb Trumpet 1-4
F Horn 1-4
Tenor Trombone 1-2
Bass Trombone
Euphonium
Tuba
Percussion: Timpani, Snare Drum, Bass Drum, Crash Cymbals (4 players total)
The piece is a love letter to the beauty of the animal world around us, and the great variety of shapes and sizes that animals come in. I feel that some human beings often disregard all animals as belonging to a large and vague group, that group being “not human beings”, and the true beauty of the creatures we share our planet with reveals itself when one takes a moment to stop and appreciate all of them as they are. Zoologists, in this sense, have a keen attachment to this beauty. After a regal opening, the work moves into a graceful and melodic lyric section, and a lively march, before reprising the opening sense of regality in a glorious and shimmering conclusion. This piece was written as a submission for the 2024 Dallas Winds Brass Fanfares Competition.
